Learn About School Policies To Keep Your Child Safe

Parents will do almost anything to make sure their child’s school is safe. So it’s not surprising that there are some new laws designed to make schools safer.

Some of these laws have led to “zero tolerance” policies in schools.

Get to know your school’s policies. You can also help your children to understand and live by these rules.

Here are some ways you can help:

  • Know your school’s rules. Does your school have a “zero tolerance” policy? What does that mean? Ask to see a copy of your school’s rules.

  • Make sure your child talks to you about what goes on at school. When children try to take matters into their own hands, they can make bad choices.
A child who feels threatened may decide to respond with violence. If another child has threatened yours, let the school know.

  • Talk about the rules with your children. Make sure they know exactly what is and is not allowed at school. You might say, “Hitting isn’t allowed at school. Even if another student makes you very angry.”

  • Talk about how to solve problems in positive ways.

  • Find out how the school is teaching children positive behaviors. Does your school teach character education? Support those lessons at home.
